Using tree cabling to help retain tree growth
Tree cabling is one of the most common forms of structural support for trees. Tree cabling and bracing help reduce stress damaged caused by catastrophic weather conditions and high winds. This will allow your tree(s) to be strong and grow big and upright!
Cabling is crucial in tree care due to three main factors.
- Prevention- tree cabling helps with the structural support and prevents structural weakness in a healthy tree.
- Mitigation-prevents the hazard potential caused by a tree’s structure. (for example-a tree growing at an angle causing it to hover over a building)
- Restoration-a tree that has been damaged by a storm leaving the rest of the tree weak and vulnerable.
Tree care is essential in healthy tree growth and you need to determine if the tree is worth preserving and have taken all things into consideration. Is the tree healthy? Is the tree worth preserving? Do you understand that tree cabling doesn’t guarantee that tree failure may not still occur? Are you prepared to have the cable inspected once a year and replaced after 7-10 years?

- The arrangement of the rods and cables
- Make sure all material and work is in accordance with ANSI(A300 tree care standards)
Cabling helps with weak limbs by connecting two or more limbs together and provide added support to weak or hazardous limbs. If the limbs are split, decayed, and poorly structured then mechanical support may be needed. Bad structure is more vulnerable to breaking under high winds or ice and snow. Tree cabling can be helpful but even support cables have limitations.
